Class Action Against American Airlines Expands Beyond Boston

February 5, 2010 - Boston, Mass. - Skycaps who believe their employer is responsible for the loss of their tips may join a class action lawsuit against American Airlines. The case originated in Boston, but now extends to skycaps from around the country.

According to The Washington Post, the plaintiffs said that because the airline implemented a $2 curbside baggage fee, the skycaps have lost many of the tips usually offered to them by customers. U.S. District Court Judge William Young certified the class action suit on Thursday.

The Massachusetts class action lawsuit was initiated 1 ½ years after a jury approved an award of $325,000 in lost tips to nine Massachusetts skycaps. All are former employees of American Airlines. At this time, 85 airports now have skycaps seeking damages because of the baggage fees.

Of course, American Airlines does not agree with the court's decision to award damages to those involved in the Massachusetts class action lawsuit. The lawsuit-which addresses employee rights-could add up to millions of dollars paid out to the airline employees, who lost valuable income because of American Airlines practices.
