Talk about being slapped in the face. The banks and insurance companies are bailed out by hard working Americans who paid their taxes. The reward -- big, fat bonuses to the taxpayer for saving the financial system? No, big, fat bonuses to the executives of the corporations who failed America. Sweet injustice. The disconnect between Wall Street and the working class American is palpable. Sadly, the disconnect between the Washington politicians and the working class American appears to be beyond repair.
The political Right and Left should be charged with obstructing democracy. They are both heading down one-way streets in the opposite direction from the center of town where most Americans are crying for help. The Democratic leadership was invited to the finest dinner money could ever buy and it tripped and fell before it got to the dining room table. Amazing. They were up by 30, with the other team tired and bewildered, and managed, through tremendous ineptitude and high-fiving on the sidelines, to let the Republicans back in the game. One of the Democrats first moves should have been to reduce taxes and take the final arrow out of the Republicans' quiver.
The Obama Administration is not much better. It has taken its eye off of what is important. Someone has to let them know that the stimulus money is not making it to Main Street and healthcare reform does not put people back to work right now. People operate in the reality of today as mortgage payments are due on time this month, not some time in the future. Propping-up big business with bail-outs does not help small businesses hire new employees, nor does a $5,000 new hire incentive, which does nothing to pay the new employee's salary for the rest of the year. How about you waive taxes on small businesses if they invest the money they would have paid in taxes into hiring a new employee or buying equipment. Probably too radical and simple a concept for you. If it does not involve bail-outs and bonuses, it must be a bust. Let the small businessman determine his own fate.
The Republicans, who caused the majority of this financial mess, have found fiscal religion at the same time the juice of eight years of power and malfeasance is still dripping from their lips. They are the epitomy of the word hypocrite. The Republicans are so infatuated with regaining power and control that they cannot even step-up for America and propose constructive ideas for fear of losing ground in the game of disgracing the other party. "If we just keep disgracing the Democrats long enough and prevent them from accomplishing anything, the people will forget what we did and like us again." Both parties are engaged in a pathetic dance of ineffectiveness.
Somewhere in this country there is a third option. Maybe a person will emerge who actually captures and carries the heart and voice of the American people. We thought that was President Obama, but he lost his way. Can he follow the bread crumbs back to the heart of America?
