12 Class Action Lawsuits Filed Against Toyota

February 5, 2010 - Considering the immensity of the recent Toyota recalls, it should not be surprising that the automobile manufacturer already faces several class action lawsuits.
According to Bloomberg.com, there are 12 class action lawsuits pending against Toyota. One of the suits, which is based in Texas, centers on the assertion that the automaker appears to have known about some of the Toyota Prius safety issues, but stalled in initiating the safety recall. Toyota has currently ceased production and sale in the United States of eight models.
Those involved in many of the class action suits claim that there is more to the safety issue than the defective pedals and floor mats cited by the automaker, and the plaintiffs say they experienced problems not related to those items. These plaintiffs do not believe that the repairs currently offered at Toyota dealerships will properly address the issue.
Though the Toyota recall is just now bringing these safety issues to light, Massachusetts-based Safety Research & Strategies, Inc. has seen more than 2200 reports of sudden acceleration in Toyotas since 1999.
Thus far, there have been Toyota class action suits filed in Louisiana, California, and Florida with more likely on the way.
