March 1, 2010 - Stoughton, Mass. - An elderly Stoughton man died while defending his wife from an armed intruder on Saturday morning.
The Boston Herald reports Georgios Kontsas, 78, was home with his wife when John M. Rooney, 46, allegedly broke into the house and attacked the elderly couple with a knife.
Authorities said Georgios Kontsas was fatally wounded when he tried to protect his wife, Dorothea Kontsas, 74, during the attack. Dorothea Kontsas was able to escape out the back door and run to a neighbor's home to call the police. Sadly, Georgios Kontsas suffered fatal wounds in the struggle and died before EMTs arrived just after 10:17 a.m.
Dorothea Kontsas was taken to a Boston hospital for the treatment of serious personal injuries, including stab wounds to the neck.
Police continue to investigate the fatal knife attack. Authorities apprehended Rooney and have charged him with assault with intent to murder a person over age 60, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, armed assault at a dwelling, and murder.
