February 4, 2010 - Washington - The Toyota recall is one of the biggest stories of consumer safety violations this year, with an estimated 8 million Toyota vehicles having been recalled because of critical safety concerns.
The U.S. Department of Transportation is considering fining Toyota millions of dollars after charging the car company with civil penalties. Company officials deny accusations of stalling on the recall, stating that it was a voluntary action meant to reduce personal injuries among drivers.
The massive recall is the result of complaints about unwanted acceleration when drivers try to stop the car. Though the vehicle recall primarily affects Prius owners, several other makes of Toyota have had similar issues.
According to AFP, the Toyota recall was initiated after 100 known complaints and 2 personal injuries were reported as a result of the Prius pedal problem. About 2.3 million Prius are being recalled because the gas pedals have been shown to stick even when not pressed, resulting in unintended and unsafe acceleration.
Freep.com reports that automaker has issued a mass recall on an additional five million cars because of a floor-mat that may become easily pinched between pedals, possibly contributing to the acceleration issue. Toyota is instructing customers affected by the recall to go to a Toyota dealer for assistance.
Despite these safety issues, representatives for the auto company insist that the defect is rare, and does not usually present itself suddenly. However, Toyota Tacoma trucks have reportedly shown the same acceleration issue as the Prius, despite using different pedal assembly.
